Chapter Fourteen

“More than you would think.”

Rylan’s cryptic comment started the pre-coffee wheels turning. “What are you going to do? You never said what you did for work. Are you in law enforcement or something? A super spy for Interpol?” She grinned, adding the last guess as a joke, but he didn’t return her smile.

“Or something.” He scrunched his eyebrows together. “Before I go, we need to talk.”

How did things get so complicated? He’s been nothing but honest with me. I guess I do owe him some answers. “It’s too early.” Alina groaned. “I need—”

“Un café? Oui?”

She nodded.

Picking up the room phone, he placed a quick call to room service. When their order arrived, Rylan handed her a steaming mug of coffee.

She cradled the large mug in her hands and took a deep, fortifying breath. “Okay, shoot.”

His face gentled, trying to look as nonthreatening as possible. “What happened to you, Allie? I see the fear in your eyes. Are you in some kind of trouble?”

“I don’t even know where to begin.” How in the world did you explain getting caught in an ancient fairy-wizard feud to a non-magical who wasn’t even supposed to know such people existed? It was kind of impossible. He would think I’m nuts. And, to be fair, in his shoes, I would think I was nuts too.

“Trust me, Allie. I can help you.”

She gulped deep breaths of air, almost choking on the frenzy. Tears blurred her vision. Her hands started shaking so hard she put down her mug, sloshing a bit of coffee over the rim. “My f-friend’s grandmother tried to—” She sucked in more air, desperate for its life-sustaining quality that tethered her to the present. “She attempted to—” She closed her eyes, seeing only Helene looming over her, unable to eradicate the image.
